| Shoemaker in the Figures of Clay |
|
|
Maria da Conceição, better know artistically as "Conceição Sapateiro" (Shoemaker), was born in the city of Barcelos where she lives in the parish of "Areias de São Vicente". Maria da Conceição Alves Fernandes, a shoemaker's daughter, learned with your mother the art of moulding the clay.
The city of Barcelos is without a doubt the national center to all the potters. A sort of "school" created it self here, and is transmitted to the exterior with great success and continuity. The "Figures of Barcelos" is one of the most authentic expressions in the popular Portuguese imaginary.
The success of ceramic popular art in both rural and urban settings can be explained by an abundance of clay and by a tradition consolidated by time.
In the work of "Conceição Sapateiro" a certain popular imaginary is evident and the portrait of everyday life in the region reveals itself. The pieces of art express religious feelings through saints, Christ's, Native scenes, etc, and the portrait popular professional figures-poulterer's, fish wives-and also elements of feasts and processions-musicians and bands-etc.
Every single masterpiece is made by hand and painted by the artisan, with an essentially decorative touch.
This potter, breaking up with the Barcelos tradition, gives to your pieces a polychromatic glazed finishing. In 1995, your work was distinguished with the National Prize of Craft. |
