Modelling life in clay, is to give free rein to the imagination to produce burlesque figures, animals, religious pictures and figures, usually reinterprete them in a mixture of respect and mockery, or representing scenes of work and play from rural life. These are some of the examples of the astonishing and exuberant veriety of forms, themes and colors than we normally call the Figures of Barcelos, in the northern region of Portugal. Daughter of the famous ceramist Rosa Côta, Júlia Côta early entered in the art of the clay, helping the mother in your works and learning with her the techniques and inspirations of this kind of art. In the early stages she painted with tips of matches, which absorbed the paint and softened the tips breaking them, thus leading to the need to find other techniques, which led to the actual form, consisting of the use of dry pine leaves. Been born in the parish of "Santa Maria de Galegos", city of "Barcelos", Júlia Côta lives now in a parish called "Manhente" which is situated in the same city. The name Júlia Côta is a reference in the art of workmanship ceramics in the region. Júlia Côta's it is one of the few artists that creates, recreates and paints the pieces, what gives them an originality character and a very own personal mark. The noble city of Barcelos, in Cávado's right margin is the largest country in the country in number of parishes. Barcelos is included in Santiago's Roads, and for that reason the "pilgrims' boat" or the "small boat" (Barc + ellus), as proper name and always place of passage for of High Minho and of Galicia Lands. Barcelos is a city rich of history where is possible still today appreciate testimonies of admirable dones that happened in the secular streets, elegant buildings, manors, churches and in the imprisonment towers. |
