Viana do Castelo is one of the cities in the region of the so-called Alto Minho, the most northern part of Portugal, that is a fishing port as well as a tourist center. Viana do Castelo lies between the sea and the river, and is characterized by geometric streets interchanging with narrow alleys and squares, having unique and unmistakable typical features, revealing charming recesses. The region of Alto Minho in Portugal is one of the richest regions in what concerns folk traditions and habits, perfectly identified through its wonderful natural beauty. These traditions and habits provide a voyage back to the past, shown through the artistic expression, sensibility, and unique knowledge that its inhabitants possess, and transmit. This is the case of Isilda Parente, born in the parish of Perre, who since 1985 embraced with great dedication in the art of the traditional embroideries of Viana do Castelo. She dignifies this traditional art earnestly, watching over the quality of the embroideries with a hawk’s eye. The richness and perfection of the embroidery, and the concern to preserve the antique, traditional motifs on the embroideries, are remarkably evident on the fine pieces she has been producing. To add that these motifs and the tradition behind them are the reason why the people of Alto Minho are so proud of their embroideries. The motifs of the embroidery can be made onto the typical festive costumes, or onto tablecloths, and they are inspired in flowers, brambles, leaves, pets, geometric elements and symbols, but the most typical and frequent motif used is the heart. The thread is made out of blue, red and white cotton. In the more complex pieces of these embroideries gray and gilded threads are used. The used points are: tingles, flower foot, chain and metal chain. Once applied only onto the traditional festive costumes, later on they were transposed onto another type of pieces, namely pieces to be used in daily domestic life. The embroideries distinguish themselves due to the variety of colors used. The artisan has already seen published, in various magazines (decoration and arts magazines), articles about her work. Besides this, some of her embroideries have already been used on some costume creations of the famous Portuguese fashion designer Nuno Gama, which enabled Isilda Parente to divulge her works on the cat-walks of some of the main Fashion capitals of the world. |
